Clinical Skills-Applying for an NPI

The National Provider Identifier (NPI) is a 10-digit number that the government issues to healthcare providers as a unique identifier for each healthcare provider. The NPI number is a legal requirement for all covered providers under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). It provides information on payers and other partners under a specific provider (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), 2021). All covered healthcare providers and their partners must use the NPI when making Medicare insurance claims. The NPI is also required for one to be able to enroll and disenroll from CMS services, to coordinate and facilitate payment of benefits and premiums, for remits, referrals, and payment authorizations. The NPI can be applied in three ways: through the online portal provided by CMS, through a paper mail application, or through an authorized CMS contractor. Notably, the online application is the most recommended due to its time efficiency in the application process. To make an online application, one must first visit the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) website. The person or group seeking to make the application will be required to create a username and password via the Identity & Access Management (I&A) System (Arias, 2021). The created username and password are used for login purposes.

Further, for the mail application, one must request or download an application form for the NPI Enumerator, fill in all the required fields, sign, and ensure the filled form is delivered to 7125 Ambassador Road, Ste 100 Windsor Mill, MD 21244. Lastly, applications via CMS contractor will require the applicant to allow an Electronic File Interchange Organization (EFIO) to access their data and send it through a bulk enumeration process (Arias, 2021).
